Description
In the United Kingdom, there has been a growing public disquiet and moral panic about cases of abuse to vulnerable children and adults. Since the 1970s, there have been numerous inquiries into these tragic incidents, all attempting to ‘learn the lessons’ from past mistakes in order to mitigate risk in the future. Yet, our understanding of how knowledge from these inquiry reports is disseminated and subsequently applied by social workers, remains scant. This research will carry out an evaluation of how social work programmes, at the qualifying and post qualifying levels in Northern Ireland, convey knowledge of this area, how it is received by the participants and applied to their practice. The findings should have relevance for a regional constituency including social work agencies and their training departments. In addition, given the parallel health and social work infrastructures within the United Kingdom, the findings will be pertinent to other jurisdictions within Britain.
