Description
This case-study provides access to a Tutors' Manual which was written to support Graduate Teaching Assistants working with undergraduate students at Edinburgh University. The manual was designed specifically for Social Policy but is now used more widely in Social Science teaching. Sections of the manual are relevant to anyone working with Social Science students in small groups and wishing to improve their skills and incorporate new ideas. The manual is included here in full and can be viewed in rtf format. Ownership of the manual remains with the School of Social and Political Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Colleagues wishing to design a Tutors Manual for teaching staff in their own institution will find the manual useful in providing ideas of information to include. The information provided here is of course specific to Edinburgh University but could be adapted to the requirements of another setting. Appendix two of the manual is of general interest as it provides many interesting ideas for working with students in small groups. These include information and ideas for using tutorials for skills development and a review of a wide range of teaching methods including buzz groups, debates, games and role-plays. Even the most experienced teachers are likely to find something new here. There is also advice on dealing with problems such as imbalances in participation between students. Appendix three provides a short guide to the requirements of the Disability and Discrimination Act in terms of teaching, learning and assessment.
